Conditions of wudhu

The conditions of wudhu are ten:

  1. Islam;
  2. Sanity;
  3. Age of discernment – opposite of this is early childhood. The age of discernment is realised at the age of seven, the time when a child must be ordered to pray.
  4. Intention;
  5. That the one performing it intends to fulfill it, not having the intention (to wash) for some other reason, until he has completed the process of purification;
  6. That what caused one to have to made wudhu has stopped for example, stopped urinating, vomiting, etc
  7. Before making wudhu the performance of istinja – meaning purify oneself from urine or stool, using water or other permissible material such as stones, toilet paper, etc
  8. Water being used if pure and lawful e.g. not stolen;
  9. Removing anything that prevents the water from reaching one’s skin;
  10. That when one makes ablution, the time of prayer has arrived – this is particularly applicable to those with health conditions whereby he loses control of his bladder – for instance, causing him to urinate frequently.
